Reserve Africaine de Sigean
Take a drive 54km to the north of Camping Club Mar Estang and you’ll come across one of the best animal parks in the south of France. Reserve Africaine de Sigean covers an area of approximately 300 acres and is open 365 days a year.
Opened in 1974 this wonderful reserve is home to over 3800 animals from around the world, covering an enormous variety of species. The park is separated into different areas depending upon the animals natural environment with woodland, scrubland and lagoons all being present. There are opportunities to see animals either on foot or during a drive through area. On your trip to the reserve be prepared to see animals such as antelopes, bears, giraffes, rhinos, elephants, alligators, lions, chimpanzees and birds including ibis, flamingos, pelicans and storks. Make sure you plan to go to the reserve for the whole day to ensure you see all the animals. There’s a picnic area at the park if you want to take food or failing that there’s a restaurant and snack bar already on site!
Villefranche de Conflent
Villefranche de Conflent is a wonderful town which lies at the junction of two rivers, El Cadi and La Tet approximately 65km to the west of Camping Club Mar Estang.
The town is classified as a UNESCO world heritage site and is also “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France” one of the most beautiful villages in France!
The original town dates back to the 11th Century, however the towns fortifications were substantially upgraded in the 17th Century under Vauban’s guidance along with the construction of Fort Liberia.
The town itself is filled with history and visitors are reminded to take a camera as there are many wonderful photo opportunities to be had here. Along with the stunning history, Villefranche de Conflent contains many different shops including traditional bakeries, leather workers, potters and goldsmiths but to name a few. Whilst in the town we recommend you also take a journey on the little yellow train, (Petit Train Jaune) where you’ll be able to enjoy some truly marvellous scenery of the upper valley in which the La Tet river lies.
Collioure is a picturesque village and port which is located just 15 miles from the Spanish border and can be found 23km to the south of Camping Club Mar Estang.
There is plenty to see in Collioure including the church of Notre Dame des Anges, the Chateau Royal de Collioure (castle) and the old fishing village. Many of the quaint cottages are painted in a variety of colours which has led to a variety of artists visiting Collioure over the years.
The church can be found at the northern edge of the harbour, on a small headland and boasts a wonderfully ornate alter. The Chateau Royal de Collioure is located at the other end of the beach and is quite a sight. It was constructed in the 13th Century and was home to both the Templars and also the Kings of Majorca. Entry prices into the Chateau are very reasonable and you can get some really good photos of the surrounding area from it.
Perpignan is both the nearest city to Camping Club Mar Estang and also the last major city along the coast before you reach the Spanish border. Perpignan lies just 15km to the west of the campsite and is well worth a visit if you fancy a day out.
As Perpignan is so close to the Spanish border it’s hardly surprising that there’s a lovely mix of both French and Catalan food, culture and history within the city.
Perpignan throughout it’s history has been both the capital of Roussillon itself and also the capital of the Kingdom of Majorca. The Spanish twist can be seen clearly within many of the buildings and architecture of the city. The Palais des Rois de Majorque for example is a lovely building which was built in the 13th Century and was once the residence of the king. Le Castillet was built in the 14th Century and is home to a museum focusing on Catalonian art and can be found in the centre of town. As with many of the larger cities in France, Perpignan boasts a great variety of shops, cafes and restaurants. These range from traditional craft shops and quaint restaurants to the more modern shops and food establishments.
