Rochefort

Rochefort is a historical port that can be found 75km to the southeast of Camping Le Ilates campsite. This wonderful place is often overlooked by holidaymakers but in our opinion is well worth the visit.
Rochefort is filled with history, especially in regard to maritime warfare having been a Navy base and dockyard from 1665 right up until 1926.
The port is now home to a part of the Musee National de la Marine which also has museums in Paris, St Tropez, Brest, Toulon and Port Louis. The museum boasts a great deal of artefacts, sculptures, models and displays which shows visitors all about the French Navy, their buildings, ships and the people that served within the Navy.

Musee Ernest Cognacq

The Musee Ernest Cognacq is a great place to find out more about the history of the Ile de Re. The museum can be found within the Hotel de Clerjotte which dates back to the 15th Century and is located in the town of St Martin de Re which is 12km to the east of Camping Les Ilates campsite. The museum is home to some wonderful collections and the exhibits give visitors an insight into the islands history. Whilst in St Martin de Re don’t forget to take a look at the church and the wonderful fortification that is home to a number of collections and exhibitions dedicated to the history of the island.

La Rochelle

If you’re looking for a great place to visit which offers you a variety of things to keep the whole family busy then a trip to La Rochelle should be on the cards. The city is located approximately 35km to the east of Camping Les Ilates campsite and boasts a great deal of history and culture. The old town dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries and boasts a great deal of older styled buildings. You’ll also find a variety of museums for those interested in history. Those looking for a little culture or shopping will enjoy the great variety of shops, bars, restaurants and cafes where you can sit back and watch the world go by.
Those with children will love the aquarium where you’ll find approximately 12000 different sea creatures including turtles, sharks and much much more.

Palmyre Zoo

Although Palmyre Zoo is located some distance away to the southeast it’s worth visiting if you have an interest in wild animals. At around 113 km away from Camping Les Ilates you’ll need to go for the whole day but Palmyre Zoo’s popularity shows how good it is. Boasting over 700000 visitors each and every year it’s one of the most popular attractions in the area.
The zoo is set within a massive pine forest and is home to animals such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, tigers, polar bears, sea lions, rhinos, hippos, elephants, giraffes, gorillas, orang-utans and a variety of other mammals, birds and reptiles.
