Montelimar is a pleasant market town located 52km to the northeast of La Bastide en Ardeche. Whilst not a massively popular tourist destination Montelimar is well worth the visit if you have the chance. The towns medieval centre has a variety of interesting buildings and the Chateau des Adhemar which overlooks the town from above is also worth a visit. The Chateau was constructed in around the 12th Century and is thought to be one of the last and finest examples of a Romanesque castle. The Chateau is also now home to a contemporary art centre with a variety of art on display. Montelimar is probably most famous for it’s almond nougat which is completely different to the sort you can buy in the UK. You’ll be able to find a variety of different types of nougat on sale throughout the town during your visit.
Aubenas is another pleasant city to visit if you’re staying in the Ardeche. The city can be found on top of a hill approximately 28km to the north of La Bastide en Ardeche and is known locally as a city of art and history. Within the city boundaries you’ll be able to find a great variety of buildings which span out from the cities Chateau. Construction on the Chateau d’Aubenas began in the 12th Century with a variety of additions and alterations having been made since. The Chateau is now home to the town hall, a variety of sculptures, paintings and other art and is well worth a visit. There are other buildings worth visiting in Aubenas including the 17th Century St Benoit Cathedral and the Gargoule house which is located near to the Chateau and was built in the 16th Century.
The Pont d’Arc is one of the major tourist attractions in the Ardeche region of France and should be a place you consider visiting when staying at La Bastide en Ardeche. Located approximately 14km to the southeast of La Bastide en Ardeche, the Pont d’Arc is a wonderful feat of nature where an arch has been carved from the rock over the millennia by the Ardeche river. Standing at approximately 60m wide and 54m high, the arch is one of the regions most famous natural attractions and to be honest it’s not hard to see why so many people head here each year.
The river makes it the perfect place to explore by canoe or kayak and if you’re a bit of a history lover the nearby Chauvet Pont d’Arc cave will give you the chase to see some paleolithic cave paintings which date back over 30000 years.
Avignon can be found around 87km to the southeast of La Bastide en Ardeche and is well worth the visit if you have time to spare. Having been inhabited since Neolithic times it’s not hard to believe that this wonderful city is steeped in history of all types. The main place to head to, for most tourists, is the old town which is enclosed within beautiful medieval walls and ramparts which provide many a photo opportunity. Within the walls you’ll find not only a selection of shops, bars, cafes and restaurants but a variety of wonderful buildings. Most important of all the building in Avignon is the Palais des Papes. For the majority of the 14th Century Avignon was the official home of the Pope and this wonderfully impressive building boasts in excess of 600,000 visitors each and every year is one of the most visited monuments in all of France.
