Grotte des Planches is a spectacular cave system that lies around 29km to the north of La Pergola campsite. Located within the highest box canyon, in the heart of the Jura you’ll find a set of awe inspiring caves boasting a great number of organ pipes, stalactites and pine forest structures. Also within the cave system you’ll find the Cuisance river which is France’s primary active underground river and has helped to shape the cave into how they look today.
A trip to Grotte des Planches is well worth a visit if you have the time and the entry prices are very reasonable.
Lac de Chalain
The Lac de Chalain is the jewel in the crown of the Jura region and is the most wonderful and also the largest natural lake in the region. La Pergola campsite is located on the banks of Lac de Chalain and it’s important to note the wonderful array of activities you can partake in on or around the lake.
Those looking to spend time out on the lake itself will find it is perfect for a spot of fishing or exploring by canoe or kayak and those after a more land based activity will love the large number of walks or cycling trails that are available around the lake and you even have the opportunity to partake in horse riding.

Chateau Chalon is a very picturesque village which has been awarded “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France” of one of the “most beautiful villages in France” award.
Located a mere 22km to the northwest of La Pergola campsite, the village dates back to Roman times and is famous for the yellow coloured wine which originates from the area.
The village itself has wonderful views across the vineyards and the remains of a 13th century castle, an 11th century Romanesque church and an ancient fortified gateway can all be found here.
The Herisson Falls are a listed natural heritage site which are located 12km to the southeast of La Pergola campsite.
The falls are made up of many separate waterfalls which are located within a beautiful valley which are best seen on a 7.4km walking route which takes around 3 hours. There is also a visitors centre which is well worth a visit showing you the waterfalls throughout the various seasons, the history of the waterfalls and valley, how the landscape has developed throughout the years and how people have used the power of the river throughout the years in small scale industry.
