La Val de Bonnal is perfectly situated in the beautiful Jura countryside. The campsite has direct access to Lac de Bonnal which not only boasts a variety of water based activities such as canoeing and fishing but also has it’s own beach which makes it perfect for families looking to make the most of the water with a spot of fun and swimming.

The campsites spectacular setting means that it’s just perfect to use as a base to explore the whole of the Jura region. The best ways to explore the surrounding areas are by car, foot and bicycle so make sure you either take your own bike or hire some to make the most of your time here.

As we’ve mentioned already, there are plenty of activities to enjoy at La Val de Bonnal. Take your pick from the spectacular pool complex which boasts 7 water slides, football, a gym and even a zip wire and high rope course.

Days out and sightseeing

Whilst staying at La Val de Bonnal campsite why not find out what the local area has to offer. Exploring nearby towns and places of interest is a great way of making the most of your holiday in France.

Chateau d’Oricourt

Drive approximately 12km to the northeast of La Val de Bonnal campsite and you’ll come across Chateau d’Oricourt. Built in the 12th century, the Chateau lies facing towards the Lure plain set upon the edge of a plateau.
Chateau d’Oricourt has two surrounding walls, the first around the farm and the second surrounding the residential area. Within these walls you’ll find a selection of buildings from throughout the centuries.
In 1984 the Chateau was made a historical monument and is one of the best preserved examples of military architecture from the middle ages in the whole region.

Besançon Citadel

Besançon is located around 47km to the southwest of La Val de Bonnal and boasts what is possibly one of the most exceptional citadels is France. The Besançon citadel was built in the 17th century by the world famous military engineer Vauban. Now listed under the UNESCO system as a world heritage site, the citadel stands at around 100m above the old town and boasts fortifications which cover around 11 hectares. This spectacular military building features walls that are around 5m thick and that stand around 20m high with walkways atop of the ramparts and plenty of watchtowers and guerites. A visit to the citadel not only offers you a view back into French military history but also offers you spectacular views across the town and surrounding areas.

Grotte d’Osselle

Grotte d’Osselle is one of the most spectacular cave systems in the world and can be found around 72km to the southwest of La Val de Bonnal near to Besançon. The caves were originally discovered in the 13th century and although around 8km of caves have been discovered only a small proportion of this is viewable today. Offering a variety of beautiful scenery, geological formations and prehistoric remains the Grotte d’Osselle is definitely worth a visit.
The walkways within the caves are mostly flat having been made of concrete and there’s even a bridge which crosses the underground river.

Dino Zoo

Dino Zoo can be found 54km to the southwest of La Val de Bonnal campsite near to the town of Besançon. If you’ve got children who are interested in dinosaurs then Dino Zoo is a place that you need to visit. Set within 15 hectares of wooded parkland, Dino Zoo allows you and your children the opportunity to see a variety of scenes from prehistoric life. Take a walk through the park and discover the many life like dinosaurs such as the stegosaurus, triceratops and frightening tyrannosaurus rex. A trip to the park is well worthwhile and there’s even a 3d cinema and a variety of activities to take part in such as shooting a bow, lighting a fire and prehistoric painting.
