Perpignan is the largest city in the immediate area and the last major city on the coast before you reach the border with Spain. The city can be found just 14km to the west of Le Brasilia campsite and is well worth the visit if you have the time.
As the city is located so near to Spain you won’t be surprised to hear that it benefits from a wonderful mix of different cultures and food from both French and Catalan descent.
Perpignan boasts a chequered past having been both the capital of Roussillon and also the Kingdom of Majorca at different times. Many of the wonderful buildings, as you’d expect, take some of their architectural design from it’s Spanish roots. The Palais des Rois de Majorque is once such building which was built in around the 13th Century and which was the residence of the king. Other places to visit include Le Castillet which is located in the centre of the town. It was constructed in the 14th Century and is home to an interesting museum which focuses on Catalan art. If you’re looking for more wonderfully designed buildings then the Saint Jean quarter of town is worth a visit as it boasts some wonderful 14th and 15th Century houses and mansions. As you would expect from a large city, Perpignan also boasts a multitude of different shops, bars, restaurants and cafes for those just simply looking to either relax, try out the wonderful local cuisine or for those looking for a little retail therapy!/p>
