Anyone interested in French history and especially Napoleon Bonaparte should visit the Musee Napoleon. The museum can be found 16km to the north of Le Port de Limeuil campsite and not only is it home to over 500 paintings, objects and sculpture but it is the home of one of Napoleons direct descendants. This private collection is something that you really must see if you’ve an interest in Napoleon. Around 150 items from the collection have been declared historic monuments and clearly cannot be seen anywhere else in the world. The museum is open at various points during the year but mostly during high season between 1st July and 15th September when it’s open everyday but Saturday.
Aquarium du Perigord Noir
If you’re holidaying with your children then one place that’s worth visiting is the Aquarium at Perigord Noir. Located on the outskirts of Le Bugue and 7km to the northeast of Le Port de Limeuil the aquarium offers visitors the chance to see over 6000 fish from a variety of species.
The touch pools at the aquarium allow children to get right up close and personal with the fish and to celebrate it’s 25 year anniversary, the aquarium has opened an alligator park allowing you to see a variety of alligators and other reptiles. The aquarium is open from February – November and the entry prices are quite reasonable.
Les Grottes de Maxange
Les Grottes de Maxange are located in the village of Le Buisson de Cadouin 7km to the southeast of Le Port de Limeuil campsite.
Recognised as one of the finest dripstone caves in France, Les Grottes de Maxange offers visitors the chance to see the amazing formations close at hand. Originally used by the Caballero family for stone, it wasn’t until the year 2000 that the caves were discovered. Although the caves are a fairly new attraction the owner has kept them very natural unlike some others in the area and are therefore well worth a visit.
Gouffre de Proumeyssac
Gouffre de Proumeyssac is another fantastic cave system which can be found near to Le Bugue, just 7km to the east of Le Port de Limeuil campsite.
Discover in 1907 by Gabriel Galou, the caves give visitors the opportunity to see the wonders of nature and geology.
The main chamber in the system is more commonly known as the “Crystal Cathedral”. This is due to the vast number of monoliths, stalagmites and stalactites that are present. Entrance to the caves are either via steps or by gondola. Please be aware though that the start of the tour begins with a light show in which the gondola is one of the main attractions so all eyes will be on you as you make your decent.
