Grotte de Lascaux II
Located at Montignac, around 22km to the northwest of Les Peneyrals campsite is the stunning Lascaux Cave system. Unfortunately the original caves are closed to the public due to environmental damage but a painstaking reconstruction has been constructed nearby. The cave system was discovered in 1940 and is home to some truly wonderful Paleolithic cave paintings that are thought to be over 17000 years old. The paintings main subject are a variety of large animals which, through fossil evidence are known to have inhabited the area at that time. The new cave was created to ensure visitors could see the wonder of these beautiful cave paintings for years to come and is well worth a visit.
A 50km journey to the southeast of Les Peneyrals brings you to the wonderful village of Rocamadour. This beautiful medieval village lies clinging to the side of the cliffs high above the Alzou river and is a wonderful photo opportunity.
The village and especially the church of Notre Damn have been pilgrimage sites for many years, bringing visitors from far and wide. Much of the villages medieval splendour still survives today including many of the buildings and churches. The Via Sancta or Great Stairway consists of 216 steps on which pilgrims have to kneel on as they make their way to the top.
One building you must see whilst at Rocamadour is the Chateau. Built to protect the village from entry from the cliffs, visitors can take advantage of the tremendous views that are available from the ramparts of the surrounding areas.
Aquarium du Perigord Noir
Aquarium du Perigord Noir can be found around 38km to the west of Les Peneyrals on the outskirts of Le Bugue.
The aquarium is the largest in the area with over 6000 different fish in an astonishing 3 million litres of water. The aquarium offers a variety of different closed and open air pools with some that allow children to interact with the fish inside. To celebrate the parks 25th year anniversary there is now also an alligator park with a variety of reptiles, lizards and much, much more.
The beautiful town or Sarlat is located 10km to the southwest of Les Peneyrals campsite. Filled with many spectacular buildings dating from the Gothic, Renaisance and medieval times, Sarlat is one of the most popular places to visit in the Dordogne. In the La Traverse area you’ll find a myriad of alleyways filled with half timbered traditional houses. In the Place du Payrou you’ll discover the Maison de la Boetie, which is one of the finest houses in Sarlat which dates to the Renaissance period. Most impressive of all though is the Sarlat Panoramic lift which can be found in the old bell tower Église Sainte-Marie church. Venturing high above the towns building you’ll get a birds eye view as to why Sarlat is so beautiful and so popular.
