Days out and sightseeing
Whilst staying at Sylvamar campsite why not find out what the local area has to offer. Exploring nearby towns and places of interest is a great way of making the most of your holiday in France.
Read on to find out more about some of the great things you can enjoy nearby!
Bayonne is located 16km to the south of Sylvamar campsite and is well worth the visit.
The town is located within the Basque country and as such many of it’s buildings and architecture have a Basque look to them with lots of colourful shutters and doors.
There have been people living around Bayonne since Roman times, however much of it’s buildings date back to medieval times. Along with the great variety of buildings Bayonne was once a fortified town and much of the ramparted walls exist today. The best way to explore Bayonne is to walk around the myriad of streets as within them you’ll discover a variety of shops, bars and restaurants to explore. Two things worth seeing whilst in Bayonne is the church and the Musee Bonnat. Within the museum you’ll discover a wonderful collection of paintings by artists such as Rubens, Goya, El Greco and Degas.
Hossegor is located 13km to the north of Sylvamar campsite and is know for being the surfing capital of France. At Hossegor you’ll discover a wonderful beach and town which is perfect for the surfers and bodyboarders amongst you.The town boasts a great variety of Basque styled buildings and there are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants where you can relax. It is worth noting that the surfing is not for the absolute beginner as the Atlantic waves can be quite powerful at times. Those with younger children will find the lake at Hossegor quite useful when the waves begin to get a little larger. Behind the town you can also explore the Landes forest. The forest is very popular with those interested in walking and especially with cyclists.
La Pinede des Singes
La Pinede des Singes is a completely different attraction which is great for children. Located just 5km to the east of Sylvamar campsite, La Pinede des Singes offers you the chance to walk through a 6 hectare park, in the Landes forest and see a variety of monkeys roaming free amongst the trees. There are over 150 species of monkey in total and believe us when we tell you, children are amazed by these lovely creatures, watching them play their funny games, their cheeky faces and their energy.
Please note that the park is open from Easter and the entry prices are very reasonable.
Zoo de Labenne
The Zoo de Labenne is well within walking distance of Sylvamar campsite being located just 1.6km away to the southeast and in our opinion is well worth the visit. Covering around 5 hectares, the Zoo de Labenne is home to approximately 200 animals covering around 60 different species.
At the zoo you’ll be able to see animals such as zebras, lemurs, wolves, wallabies, parrots, racoons, deer, tortoises and much more. There’s also a lovely little farm area where you can see and even touch goats, rabbits, ponies, donkeys and sheep. Entry prices to the zoo are quite reasonable but we do recommend that you take a picnic with you to make the most of your day.
