Although Cognac is around 125km to the southeast of Interlude campsite, we think it’s well worth a visit for adult travellers. Famous for the drink of the same name you’ll find a variety of distilleries where you’ll be able to take a tour, find out a little more about the history and distilling process of Cognac and of course try a few samples. The Musee des Arts du Cognac, is also well worth a visit as you can find out even more about the drinks history and economic importance.
Just make sure if you plan to take a tipple, ensure that someone is your designated driver as the drink driver limits in France are lower than in the UK.
La Rochelle is an excellent city to visit with plenty to keep all members of the family happy irrespective of their interests. Located just 21km to the east of Interlude campsite, La Rochelle boasts a great variety of shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, French history and of course culture. There are a variety of museums and historical buildings you can visit such as the towers at the harbour and the natural history museum. You’ll also find just behind the harbour, the old town which dates back to the 17th and 18th Centuries. For children visiting La Rochelle there’s nothing better than a trip to the aquarium. Here you’ll find a great selection of sea creatures, around 12000 in total including turtles, sharks and much much more.
Rochefort is a wonderful port which is often overlooked by travellers but is well worth visiting. Located just 56km to the southeast of Interlude campsite, Rochefort is a great place for history lovers, especially those interested in the history of the sea and naval warfare.
The Musee National de la Marine is one of the main naval museums in France along with those located in Paris, Brest, Port Louis, Toulon and St Trpoez. The port itself was picked in around 1665 to be one of the main ports for the French Navy and continued to be a dockyard and Naval base right up until 1926. The museum is home to a variety of artefacts including paintings, sculptures, models and much, much more. All of the artefacts, building and displays aim to tell visitors about the history of the French Navy, their ships, how they were built and all about those that served upon them.
St Martin de Re
St Martin de Re is the capital of the island Ile de Re and can be found a mere 4km to the north of Interlude campsite. This wonderfully attractive port boasts a great deal of history within it’s walls. St Martin de Re was substantially fortified during the 17th Century, firstly under the orders of Cardinal Richelieu and then later in the 17the Century by the famous engineer Vauban.
The ramparts and fortifications give the port a great deal of character and history. One of the main places tourists tend to visit is the church. It boasts a wonderful tower with a variety of stained glass and artwork within.
