Days out and sightseeing

Whilst staying at La Palombiere campsite why not find out what the local area has to offer. Exploring nearby towns and places of interest is a great way of making the most of your holiday in France.

Read on to find out more about some of the great things you can enjoy nearby!

Sarlat

Sarlat is located 9km to the west of La Palombiere campsite and is undoubtably one of the most attractive, impressive and most visited medieval town in the Dordogne region, if not France.
The towns origins date back to the 9th Century when the benedictine abbey was first constructed but much of the stunning architecture dates back to the medieval era. A walk around the town will give you a real sense of medieval France and there are a number of places that you should visit when in Sarlat. The first is the Place de la Liberte (which is the main town square) where you’ll find yourself surrounded by a selection of interesting buildings. The second is the 12th century cathedral which is located in the Place du Peyrou and the last is the Sarlat Panoramic lift. Located in the bell tower of the 14th century Église Sainte-Marie, the lift towers above the town giving visitors the chance to see Sarlat’s beauty from above. Sarlat is a wonderful town which should not be missed if you’re visiting La Palombiere.

Indian Forest

The Indian Forest is a forest adventure course which is located only 7km to the southwest of La Palombiere campsite.
Suitable for those of all ages, Indian Forest provides a selection of courses for different ages and abilities. There are 6 different forest adventure courses to try with many different types of apparatus including monkey bridges, zip lines, rope climbs, suspended beams, Nepalese bridges and much more to test your nerve to the limit. The park is open from March to November each year but can be closed in times of heavy rain.

Castelnaud la Chapelle

Castelnaud la Chapelle can be found a mere 7km to the southwest of La Palombiere and has been classified as “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France” or one of the most beautiful villages in France. The main attraction at Castelnaud la Chapelle is the beautiful Chateau de Castelnaud which towers high above the town. Built during the 12th century, this majestical medieval Chateau is a must for those interested in medieval warfare and history. The Chateau has been carefully restored over recent years and specialises in explaining medieval warfare through it’s vast number of medieval weapons and armour and through a variety of demonstrations which are carried out during high season.

La Roque Gageac

If you’re looking for a little bit of history mixed with a great deal of beauty then take a visit to La Roque Gageac. Located 18km to the southwest of La Palombiere campsite, La Roque Gageac is possibly one of the most photographed places in France and it’s not hard to understand why. Another “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France” one of the most beautiful villages in France, the town is perched overlooking the Dordogne river and the cobbled streets that wind through the village pass by some truly beautiful buildings.
The area is thought to have been occupied in some way shape or form since pre historic times but some of the village’s most impressive sights are the defences which are carved into the cliffs that tower over the village. La Roque Gageac is a real must for visitors to the area.
