La Grotte Cocaliere
Take an 18km drive to the southwest of La Ranc Davine and you’ll stumble across La Grotte Cocaliere. Located near to St Ambroix, La Grotte Cocaliere is one of the largest caves in the Cevennes national park and possibly one of the best cave systems in France itself. The caves themselves date back approximately 146 million years and are a thing of real beauty. The cave system extends to over 30km although at this time only 1km are viewable by the public. Within this 1km however you’ll be able to see a wonderful range of cave formations which are still growing today. If you’re interested in finding out more about nature and caves then this is definitely worthwhile visiting!
Balazuc is located approximately 17km northeast of La Ranc Davaine campsite and has been classified as Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (one of the most beautiful villages in France) and it’s not hard to see why.
The area has been occupied in some way shape or form since neanderthal man roamed the earth with a variety of remains having been found nearby.
The village provides a variety of photo opportunities with some of the best pictures available for the other side of the 19th Century bridge, that spans the river.
Whilst in Balazuc ensure you visit the remains of the Chateau which dates back to the 11th and 13th Centuries and the early Christian sarcophagus. The towns quaint medieval streets should also be explored with a variety of interesting buildings lining the streets.
The Pont d’Arc is a arch that has been cut out of the rocks by the wonderful Ardeche river over the centuries. Located approximately 19km to the southeast of La Ranc Davaine campsite the Pont d’Arc is a highly visited tourist attraction and should be visited if you’re in the area. Standing at approximately 60m wide and 54m high the arch is a natural wonder at the entrance to the Ardeche canyon. Whilst at the Pont d’Arc have a look at the Chauvet Pont d’Arc cave. Within the cave you’ll be able to see some wonderful cave paintings which date back to the paleolithic era which are about 30000 years old.
La Grotte de Saint Marcel
Near to the village of Saint Martin d’Ardeche around 41km southeast of La Ranc Davaine campsite is La Grotte de Saint Marcel. A spectacular cave system measuring 57km lies below ground where they were discovered by a local hunter in 1836.
Within the caves you’ll be able to view a variety of galleries and natural phenomenons. Only 600m of the caves are currently viewable by visitors but during an hour long tour you’ll be able to discover a wonderful and mysterious underground world of basins, formations and galleries.
