Although the town dates back to Roman times much of it’s architecture is medieval in it’s origins. Once a fortified town, Bayonne’s ramparts can still be seen and walked along to this day. There are also many beautiful Basque inspired colourful buildings within many of the beautiful streets.
The best way to explore Bayonne is by foot. The best place to see these are from the Rocher de la Vierge. Most people tend to visit Biarritz either for the sea and beach or for the culture.
