Things to see and do
There are plenty of things to see and do, and places to visit, within a short distance of Camping Atlantique Parc campsite including:
- Rochefort – Rochefort is a wonderful yet often overlooked port which is full of maritime and naval history and is well worth a visit. The port was a naval base and dockyard from around 1665 up until 1926 and is now home to the Musee National de la Marine which has other bases in Paris, St Tropez, Brest, Toulon and Port Louis. The port is a lovely place to walk around with a variety of buildings, architecture and photographic opportunities. Those that love history will enjoy a trip to the museum where you can view a variety of artefacts, sculptures, models and displays which aim to explain to visitors all about maritime history, the French Navy, the port itself, the various ships and the people that would have served upon them.
- Luna Park – Luna Park can be found around 3km to the north of Camping Atlantique Parc and is a great place to visit of an evening. The park is a funfair themed park which is filled with a great variety of rides and amusements which are perfect for the whole family. Although Luna Parc doesn’t open until 8pm it’s worth a visit as kids of all ages will love to have a go on some of the fantastic rides including carousels, roller coasters, bumper cars, log flumes, mini golf, slides, and much, much more.
- Palmyre Zoo – Palmyre Zoo is the closest and one of the best attractions in the area. The zoo is also one of the most popular attractions in the region welcoming through their gates in excess of 700,000 visitors each and every year. If you’re going to go to Palmyre Zoo, make sure you allocate the whole day to it as there are so many animals to see you’ll want to spend as much time there as possible. The zoo itself is set within a huge pine forest and within it you’ll find a great range of animals from around the globe and from each of the continents including lions, leopards, cheetahs, tigers, polar bears, sea lions, rhinos, hippos, elephants, giraffes, gorillas, orang-utans and a variety of other mammals, birds and reptiles.
- Brouage – Brouage is a beautiful fortified town which was built during the 16th Century. Although you may not at first believe it, Brouage was once a very important port that made much of its wealth from the local salt trade. Due to its importance Cardinal Richelieu, during the 17th Century, ordered that the town should be fortified to protect it from attack. This order led to the wonderful styled fortifications and walls that you can see today. The reason we think you may not believe us is that many years later the waters filled with silt and receded somewhat meaning that the town was no longer viable as a port. The town itself is now classed as one of the greatest sites in France and should be visited should you have the time.
