Things to see and do
There are plenty of things to see and do, and places to visit, within a short distance of Soleil Plage campsite including:
- Grottes de Cougnac – The Grottes de Cougnac are two caves, set on a hillside which were discovered in 1949 and 1952 and have been open to the public ever since. The caves offer visitors the chance to see some wonderful natural geological formations alongside some prehistoric cave paintings. The tour of the caves lasts for approximately 1 hour with a variety of stalactites and stalagmites on offer along with the wonderful cave paintings of animals such as deer, mammoths and ibex along with a variety of figures that date back between 14,000-25,000 years. The caves are open to the public from April-November and the entry prices are very reasonable.
- Aquarium du Perigord Noir – The aquarium is home to around 6000 fish encompassing a variety of different species and is a great place to visit especially if you have children. To celebrate the aquariums 25th anniversary, an alligator park has been added to provide visitors with the chance to view a variety of alligators and other reptiles. The aquarium is the largest in the area, holding in excess of 3 million litres of water within its tanks. Children will especially love the touch pools which allow them to get up close and personal with some of the aquariums inhabitants.
- Chateau les Milandes – The Chateau is all you’d expect from a French building of this age with towers and sand coloured walls. The gardens and grounds of the Chateau are also spectacular with plenty of places to enjoy the summer sun and views of the surrounding areas. The Chateau was once home to the famous music hall entertainer Josephine Baker and as such many of the rooms are dedicated to her life and works. Unlike other Chateaux in the area, Les Milandes offers visitors the chance to watch a birds of prey show. With seating for up to 200 visitors the falconers show off between 6 and 8 of their birds of prey in a stunning 30 minute show. Some of the birds of prey you’ll be able to see include kestrels, harris hawks, American fish eagles, eagle owls and barn owls.
- La Roque Gageac – If you’re staying at Soleil Plage campsite then make sure you visit the beautiful village of La Roque Gageac. The village has been designated as one of the most beautiful villages in France or “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France” and it’s not hard to see why. Possibly one of the most photographed villages in France, La Roque Gageac looks out over the Dordogne river and has many medieval cobbled streets that wind past pretty and historic buildings. The village has been inhabited in some way shape or form for thousands of years. Defences are cut into the cliffs above the village and there is even evidence that pre historic man lived in the caves, with a variety of finds having been located there. All in all whether you’re interested in history, culture or just love to take a photo, La Roque Gageac is well worth a visit.
