Things to see and do
There are plenty of things to see and do, and places to visit, within a short distance of Camping Domaine de Chalain campsite including:
- Baume les Messieurs – Baume les Messieurs is a pretty village located at the point where three valleys meet. This wonderfully unspoilt village is home to the Baume Abbey which was formed in the 11th century as a Benedictine Abbey. The Abbey is a popular tourist attraction and is famous for its 16th century framed alter piece.
Another great place to visit near to Baume les Messieurs is Les Grottes de Baume which are a wonderful group of cave systems and underground lakes which can be found a short distance to the south of the village.
- Chateau de Joux – The Chateau de Joux occupies a truly wonderful position on top of the cliffs high above the mountain pass “Cluse de Pontarlier”. Breathtaking views are available from the Chateau which was built originally from wood in the 11th Century. To compliment the views, the Chateau holds a great deal of historical items within its museum. Over 600 exhibits show visitors how the Chateau and warfare has changed throughout the centuries and a guided tour of the museum and Chateau are well worthwhile.
- Herisson Falls – Herisson Falls are made up of many separate waterfalls located within a picturesque valley around 12km to the south of Domaine de Chalain campsite. The falls are a listed natural heritage site and well worth visiting. The best way to see the waterfalls are on the 7.4km route which takes approximately 3 hours to walk round. Those wishing to find out more about the waterfalls history, how they came into creation and how people have used the power of the water through out the years should pop into the visitors centre.
- Besancon – Besancon is a city well worth visiting, is filled with the region’s history and culture and boasts one of the most picturesque historic centres of any of the major cities in France. Founded originally by the Romans, Besancon is still home to many remains which are still visible today. This includes a 2nd Century arch at the foot of the citadel hill called the Porte Noire, and the semi circular amphitheatre. Other places of interest include the citadel built by Vauban high on the hillside overlooking the city.
