There are plenty of things to see and do, and places to visit, within a short distance of Camping les Fontaines campsite including:
- Chateau de Menthon St Barnard – Chateau de Menthon St Barnard is well worth a visit if you have the time. This medieval castle was constructed in the 10th century and was originally made from wood, however in the 13th century the present Chateau de Menthon St Barnard you see today was constructed. Within the castle you’ll find approximately 105 rooms to explore, each filled with with a variety of antiques, artwork, displays and ornaments that show visitors a little bit about the castle and regions history. The castle is open yearly for visitors between May and September and one of the most interesting things is that during this time a group of actors depict how life was like in the castle. This lifelike recreation really helps to bring the history of the castle to life especially for children.
- Aix les Bains – Aix les Bains is a beautiful town which is located on the edge of the Lac du Bourget. The town is steeped in history and is most famous for being a spa town with thermal springs that date back to Roman times. As such there are a variety of Roman remains that you can view including the Arc de Campanus and the remains of the temple near to the town hall. In the 19th century, spa towns were very popular and as a result much of the towns architecture dates back to this period of time. There’s much to see at Aix les Bains and if you’re in the area it’s well worth a visit.
- Annecy – There’s history and culture in abundance in Annecy and you’ll find lots to do to keep you busy. Take a trip on a boat cruise, visit the 12th century Palais d’Isle (which was the home of the Lord of Annecy and can be found in the centre of the canal) or take a stroll around the town visiting the many shops, bars and restaurants. The Palais d’Isle now houses the towns museum and other historical places to visit include the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre, rue Sainte Claire and the Church of Saint Maurice.
- Grotte et Cascade de Seythenex – Grotte et Cascade de Seythenex provides visitors with an insight into the magical natural properties of the region. Take a trip below ground into the magical cave system and explore 250m of caves where you’ll find a variety of geological wonders. Failing that you can climb up a variety of slopes and steps to the top of the 45m waterfall which cascades down the mountainside. Once at the top of the waterfall, there’s an option for the more adventurous to jump aboard the zip wire which takes you on a 150m exhilarating journey high above the waterfall to see the area from a different perspective.
