Camping Les Ilates

Camping Les Ilates is a small yet wonderful campsite that’s located on the Ile de Re which is just off the French coast near to the beautiful city of La Rochelle.

Ideal for those who wish to relax, Camping Les Ilates is a great family friendly campsite that is set within around 5 hectares of grounds in a lovely location. To get to the campsite you’ll have to travel along a narrow lane that runs through the salt marshes and although the nearby village of Loix is the smallest on the island, you’ll find that it’s also one of the most secluded.

Those looking to discover the local area and the island’s history and culture, will do it best on two wheels. The island boasts a myriad of cycle tracks and routes which extend to around 60 miles. These routes link the major towns and villages on the island allowing you to get around and enjoy not only the towns and villages themselves but also some otherwise unseen scenery.

Although Camping Les Ilates is one of the smaller campsites in the region, you’ll find that it still offers a fantastic range of activities and facilities both on-site and also nearby.

As you’d expect from an island campsite, you’re never really that far away from a stunning beach. This is also true with Camping Les Ilates which has a brilliant beach a mere 750m away from the campsites entrance. The beaches not only provide the perfect place for families to relax but also somewhere that they can have a massive amount of fun. If you’re a little more active then don’t feel worried as you’ll also find that there are a variety of water sports available nearby.

One of the great things about the campsite other than its fantastic location is the lovely swimming pool area that you’ll find on-site. A family pool, children’s pool, toddlers pool and a large sun terrace area ensures that there’s something for everyone at Camping Les Ilates.

Things to see and do

There are plenty of things to see and do, and places to visit, within a short distance of Camping Les Ilates campsite including:

  • Rochefort – This wonderful port is often overlooked by holidaymakers but in our opinion is well worth the visit. Rochefort is filled with history, especially in regard to maritime warfare having been a naval base and dockyard from 1665 right up until 1926. The port is now home to a part of the Musee National de la Marine which also has museums in Paris, St Tropez, Brest, Toulon and Port Louis. The museum boasts a great deal of artefacts, sculptures, models and displays which shows visitors all about the French Navy, their buildings, ships and the people that served within the navy.
  • Musee Ernest Cognacq – The Musee Ernest Cognacq is a great place to find out more about the history of the Ile de Re. The museum can be found within the Hotel de Clerjotte which dates back to the 15th Century and is located in the town of St Martin de Re. The museum is home to some wonderful collections and the exhibits give visitors an insight into the island’s history. Whilst in St Martin de Re don’t forget to take a look at the church and the wonderful fortification that is home to a number of collections and exhibitions dedicated to the history of the island.
  • La Rochelle – If you’re looking for a great place to visit which offers you a variety of things to keep the whole family busy then a trip to La Rochelle should be on the cards. The old town dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries and boasts a great deal of older styled buildings. You’ll also find a variety of museums for those interested in history. Those looking for a little culture or shopping will enjoy the great variety of shops, bars, restaurants and cafes where you can sit back and watch the world go by. Families visiting La Rochelle will also love the aquarium where you can find approximately 12000 different sea creatures including turtles, sharks and much much more.
  • Palmyre Zoo – Although Palmyre Zoo is located some distance away to the southeast it’s worth visiting if you have an interest in wild animals. Boasting over 700,000 visitors each and every year it’s one of the most popular attractions in the area. The zoo is set within a massive pine forest and is home to animals such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, tigers, polar bears, sea lions, rhinos, hippos, elephants, giraffes, gorillas, orang-utans and a variety of other mammals, birds and reptiles.
