Things to see and do

There are plenty of things to see and do, and places to visit, within a short distance of Camping Via Romana campsite including:

  • Corte – Corte is a lovely town deep in the heart of the island and was once the island’s capital. This attractive mountain town offers a great deal for visitors to see including the stunning citadel which was constructed during the reign of Louis XV. A visit to the citadel’s museum is well worthwhile although the long walk may put some off. The town’s museum should also be visited whilst in Corte.
  • The Gorges Restonica – The Restonica Valley is one of the most beautiful sights on the whole of Corsica. Beautiful mountains and the stunning river and pools that line the gorges are highly popular with tourists. The best way to explore is by foot and there are many paths and tracks along which you can walk. One of the best routes is towards Lake Melo although please note it is not for the fainthearted.
  • Urbinu Lake – Located a stones throw from the campsite is Urbinu Lake which is the second largest lake on Corsica. Covering an area of around 750 hectares, the lake is absolutely stunning and a paradise for a whole variety of different types of birds and wildlife including herons, kingfishers and egrets. Oysters are also farmed in the area and it’s possible to not only taste some of the local produce but to also see some of the farming methods.
  • Aleria – The town of Aleria has been occupied in some way or another for thousands of years . The most impressive remains include those from Roman times including a Roman villa and necropolis. A visit to the museum, Jerome Caropino, should be on your list of things to do if you visit the town as you’ll discover a number of archaeological finds pottery, busts, sculptures and money from throughout the ages.
