- Fort Boyard – Fort Boyard can be found between the Ile d’Oleron and the Ile d’Aix in the Pertuis d’Antioche straits. This amazing fortification was constructed in the early 19th Century under the orders of Napoleon Bonaparte. The fort itself is in an oval design and stands at approximately 31m wide, 68m long and 20m high. Fort Boyard is home to the popular TV gameshow (with the same name) which is filmed here. Although at present there are no trips to the fort itself, there are many boat trips that will take you out and around it so that you can see it up close.
- La Rochelle – Although the drive takes a little over an hour, it’s well worth taking the time to visit this wonderful place. Standing at the entrance to the port you’ll find two impressive medieval towers. You’ll also find a great variety of shops, restaurants, cafes and bars to explore and one thing not to be missed is the aquarium. Within the aquarium you’ll find in excess of 12,000 different creatures including the gentle sea turtle and stunning sharks.

Rochefort was chosen in 1665 as a port for the French Navy and served as a dockyard and naval base up until 1926. Those interested in naval history of any kind will love a trip to the Musee National de la Marine which is one of the main naval museums in France. At the museum you’ll be able to see a variety of paintings, sculptures, models, building and much, much more which will show you all about the history of the French Navy, their ships, how they were built and all about those that served upon them.
- Palmyre Zoo – Palmyre Zoo is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the region with in excess of 700,000 people visiting each year. Set within an 18 hectare pine forest, the zoo is home to a multitude of animals and creatures from a variety of different species.
