Things to see and do
There are plenty of things to see and do, and places to visit, within a short distance of Le Chateau des Marais campsite including:
- Le Mans – Anyone at all interested in motor racing, will instantly recognise Le Mans as the home of the 24 hour race which started in 1923. Thousands of visitors attend Le Mans each year to view the race with many also attending to try their hand at many of the driving experience courses that are available. What many people forget however is that Le Mans existed prior to the start of motor racing. Le Mans’ origins date back to before Roman times and there are many Roman remains that are still viewable today including the 3rd century amphitheatre and the Gallo Roman walls. Due to its strategic importance, Le Mans was also the scene for many battles throughout time including during the time of William the Conqueror and even World War 1 and World War 2.
- Orleans – Orleans has been of strategic importance dating back as far as Gallic times when it was known as Cenabum. Steeped in history it’s best known as the city that New Orleans in America is named after and the place that Joan of Arc saved from siege in 1429. Due to her endeavours to save the city, Joan of Arc was known as the Maid of Orleans or (La Pucelle d’Orleans). The city itself boasts a variety of different sightseeing opportunities such as the Sainte Croix Cathedral, the Gallo Roman wall that dates back to the 4th century AD, the Musee des Beaux Arts d’Orleans which holds art works from the 15th to 20th Century and a reconstruction of the house that Joan of Arc stayed in.
- Chateau de Chaumont – The Chateau sits on a hill overlooking the river and was originally constructed in the 10th Century to protect the borders between the areas of Anjou and Blois. Unfortunately there is nothing left of the original Chateau as it was destroyed by King Louis XI in the 15th Century. What stands here now is a beautiful Renaissance style Chateau which is a great place to visit with many rooms within the Chateau offering visitors the chance to view a variety of antiques and artworks with the aim of showing what life would have been like in the Chateau during its heyday. The Chateau and its grounds are truly spectacular but those interested in art will love the multitude of contemporary art exhibitions and displays which are dotted around the Chateau, its outbuildings and its grounds.
- Adventure Park – This brilliant tree top adventure park and paintball course will provide children and adults with a great place to have a lot of outdoor fun. There are a variety of different tree courses for various ages (from 6 and over) and abilities with a selection of different rope climbs, ladders, swings and zip lines available to challenge you. For those under the height and age requirements there’s also a playground and for those older ones looking for a bit more excitement, the paintball arena will give you a great challenge in warfare.
